How We’re Leading the Fight in Tampa Bay
Hepatitis C is a public health crisis that continues to affect millions of Americans, including those right here in Pinellas County and across Florida. However, with ongoing efforts to increase testing, treatment, and awareness, we are making strides towards eradicating Hep-C once and for all. At Love The Golden Rule, we are at the forefront of these efforts, providing compassionate, inclusive care to those most at risk.
The National and Local Picture: Understanding the Hep-C Epidemic
“Hepatitis C is a silent epidemic in our community, but with the right resources and compassionate care, we can achieve eradication. It’s about ensuring that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, has access to testing, treatment, and support,” said Dr. Robert Wallace, founder and medical director at Love The Golden Rule.
Nationally, an estimated 2.4 million people in the U.S. are living with chronic Hepatitis C, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Florida, with its high rate of intravenous drug use and other contributing factors, ranks among the top states for new infections. In Pinellas County, the opioid crisis has exacerbated the spread of Hep-C, highlighting the urgent need for local intervention.
Fortunately, antiviral treatments now offer a 95% cure rate, making eradication an achievable goal. The challenge is ensuring that high-risk populations have access to these life-saving treatments.
“One of the biggest challenges we face is the stigma around Hepatitis C and how it prevents people from seeking help. At Love The Golden Rule, we focus on creating a safe space where people can get the care they need without judgment,” said Wallace.
Across Florida, organizations like the Florida Department of Health have launched initiatives aimed at expanding access to Hep-C testing and treatment, particularly in underserved areas. In Pinellas County, mobile clinics and harm reduction programs are playing a crucial role in reaching high-risk populations. The introduction of needle exchange programs, including one in Miami through the IDEA Exchange, has proven effective in reducing the spread of Hepatitis C.
Being A Pillar of Inclusive Care in the Community
We are proud to be a leading nonprofit in the Tampa Bay area, providing services to individuals regardless of their ability to pay. We believe that healthcare is a fundamental right, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need. As a trusted pillar of inclusive care, we serve diverse populations, particularly focusing on marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ+ community and low-income individuals.
Not only do we provide compassionate medical services, but we also take an active role in the community by hosting fundraisers, participating in local events, and spreading awareness about critical public health issues like Hepatitis C. Our goal is to be a welcoming, judgment-free space where patients can seek the treatment they deserve, without fear of discrimination or financial burden. Through our ongoing involvement in the community, Love The Golden Rule is becoming a leading voice for healthcare access and equity in Tampa Bay.
“Our mission is to meet people where they are, providing comprehensive care that not only treats Hepatitis C but also addresses the underlying issues, like addiction or lack of access to healthcare, that contribute to the spread of this disease,” said Wallace.
At Love The Golden Rule, we provide comprehensive testing and treatment services for Hepatitis C, focusing on high-risk groups such as low-income individuals and the LGBTQ+ community. Our work extends beyond the clinic—we collaborate with local organizations to provide education, reduce stigma, and offer holistic care to those most vulnerable.
The Path Ahead: Overcoming the Challenges to Eradication
While the cure for Hepatitis C is available, the barriers to eradication remain steep. The American Liver Foundation notes that untreated Hep-C can lead to long-term health complications, including liver cirrhosis and cancer, if not addressed. The high cost of treatment and lack of awareness are significant hurdles to care. At Love The Golden Rule, we continue to combat these issues by offering accessible, affordable care to all in need, regardless of their ability to pay.
