AIDS History and Me

Hello friends, “Optimal Management of HIV Disease and Hepatitis” otherwise known as Opman took place in Miami this weekend. This is the 23rd year and I believe I have only missed 2 over that time. It is great to listen to the new data and feel reassured that we at Love the Golden Rule Inc. are doing everything we should be, and more.It always refuels me to get back here and start a new project. Dr Mike Saag, MD stared his training at the University of Alabama, Birmingham just a year before I started my Residency Training here in St. Petersburg in 1982. He has been one of the Co-Chairs of this conference from the beginning. Others have stepped away, but Dr Saag was always the one we knew would be there. With his vast knowledge, and incredible laboratory work, he taught us all that we could handle this disease and make a difference. He is one of my heroes in the world of HIV/AIDS. While he spent time in the laboratory and founded an awesome clinic in Alabama,I was spending my nights at the homes of patients dying from AIDS, frightened that we would not be able to get this under control soon enough. Participating in Clinical Trials myself, gave me […] readmore

The Clinic at 721

Hello friends, Now that we have 300 patients, and are getting people on treatment for Hepatitis C everyday, we get the chance to see people being cured from Hepatitis C and how it is changing their lives. For those of you who know me, my passion has been HIV/AIDS and I am in the process to become a provider in the networks that are covering most of those living with HIV. I am opening up the practice to the general public for those who wish to see me. Love the Golden Rule Inc has just been approved for Medicare, and by the end of next week we will be approved by Medicaid Well Care. If you as patients will please contact your insurance companies and ask them to add me as a provider, we will be able to get you in to see me soon. I am excited to be back practicing Medicine again. I’m still working one day a week at the Health Department, after all I have bills to pay too. MORE EXCITING NEWS ABOUT HEPATITIS C. We just had the company from Miami(Bio-Collections) up here last week, and between my office, Pinellas Hope (tent city),and Safe Harbor we collected blood from 126 patients. We can now begin […] readmore

What a Great Weekend

Hello Friends, This weekend was the Florida Recovery Roundup in Miami. There were 908 people all in one hotel mingling and sharing and caring for each other. I spent time listening to people tell their stories about recovery and reaching their dreams. It really fills your heart with love and gratitude, just like Love the Golden Rule. Helping people reach their dreams, by getting cured of chronic viral diseases, learning to battle addictions, and building self esteem. This week we will be testing over 100 people, gathering information at 2 of the largest homeless shelters, and at the clinic at 721. Once we have the results, we can apply for the patient assistance program and get them on therapy. So far, we have had 5 patients reach the undetectable status, and with a second test in a few months, the will be told that they are cured. This is an awesome feeling, and the stories we are already hearing are heart warming. In the office, Carol is organizing and helping gear up for our 2 fund raising events. On April 18th we will have an Open House, to let everyone see the progress. We may even be under construction at that time. Our theme will be “Change Your Thinking About […] readmore

Your Sister or Brother could be infected with Hepatitis C this Weekend

The clinic at 721 is now seeing 2 to 5 patients each week who now have undetectable viral counts. With one more test in 12 weeks they we be CURED of Hepatitis C. Every patient we cure eliminates the chance for your daughter, son, brother, sister, aunt, uncle or friend to catch the deadly virus. Just this week, I saw a high school student who was infected while attending a party where someone decided to do tattoos on all the people attending. This person was devastated, but with what we are doing, we will get the medication for free, and be able to cure someone who can move on and live a healthy life. We have only been open for 3 months. Patients coming to us need 2 blood tests before we can start treatment. The cost of these tests alone are over $1000.00. We have negotiated with a clinical research company from Miami to drive up here and help us. We will be at Pinellas Hope, known as tent city, on March 19th, to get blood tests done at no charge for the homeless residents there. It is estimated that 40% of the people living there have Hepatitis C. We hope to get 50 people tested that day. On March […] readmore

The Building Looks Awesome

Hello Friends of Love the Golden Rule. With great thanks to Mason Schawake and Korey Lightford, the murals and the characters on the building have added new character and life. Both of these artists worked very hard to give us a clear view of Love the Golden Rule and our mission. We thank you for your talent and your support. Please come by and see the new look. The awnings were installed last Friday as well, so now we don’t look like an abandoned building any more. Each step is raising awareness that we are here and sparking more interest in what we are doing. The clinic population continues to grow. It has been necessary to increase my time at the clinic. I am now seeing HIV/AIDS patients, and Hepatitis C patients from 9:00AM until 4:00 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Our Better My Image program is growing every week. If you know someone struggling with Obesity, please have them call 727-228-1650 and ask for an appointment on any Friday. We also offer an Over-Eater’s Anonymous meeting from 12:30 to 1:30PM every Friday. That group is getting a good attendance and is growing as well. The apartments upstairs have been demolished, thanks to the help of some great men […] readmore

Latest Updates

Hello Everyone, We are pleased to announce that our first two clients have passed their 8 week treatment and their Hepatitis C viral loads are undetectable. We are extremely excited to say the least. We are also continuing to grow at a steady rate of five new clients a week that we are getting into treatment. The great news is that they are reporting no side affects to the medication they are on. That is great news on the side affects front. Our obesity program BMI (Better My Image) is starting to take off. We currently have seven clients enrolled, which is a great start to a wonderful program. They are meeting with me one-on-one, and will be for the first six weeks. After which I will be asking them to meet as a group so they can get support and inspiration from others. There is a wonderful Overeaters Anonymous meeting that meets every Friday at 12:30 P.M. It is a great program for those battling the same addiction. Our demolition project will be happening this Saturday, February 14th from 9AM to 5PM. We will be gutting the entire upstairs so we can start anew with our apartments. We feel this will be the best way to get everything the […] readmore

We had over 200 people come through while we gave out weight scales to those fighting obesity, blood pressure cuffs and healthy food. On another great note, our first patient started on treatment for Hepatitis C has become undetectable for the virus, and with one more test to confirm, we will be listed as a cure. We have many more just behind him and hope to cure 500 people in this year. We are in need of donations to help us get the clinic equipped with Electronic Medical Records and need at least $10,000.00 to do this. Every dollar helps, so please click on the donation button and support us. Finally please look at our new Mural on the North side of our building. e give thanks to Mason and Korey for the awesome job they have done so far, and we look forward to the completion. We are continuing to grow

January 19th, 2015 Hello Friends, The clinic at 721 continues to grow. We are seeing 6-8 new patients everyday, and getting approvals to put them on the life saving drugs for Hepatitis C. Or first 2 patients are nearing completion and we hope to see that they are cured. On another note, the mission statement of Love the Golden Rule is: we are a group of people dedicated to advancing and enhancing the lives of any one who ever had a dream. At the age of 59 I just got one of my dreams to come true. The right to marry my spouse. ON January 6th, 2015, JoJo and Dr. Bob Wallace were married by Mayor Rick Kriseman at City Hall in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was an event to remember. We made history and want to Thank the Mayor and his staff for their wonderful support. Please consider donation to us. We have a lot more plans, and cannot move forward without donations. Happy Holidays from Love the Golden Rule

December 22, 2014 The clinic is getting busier every day. We are at the point where our volunteers, Donna, Albert, Bill, Mark and Gordon are so busy that we need more help. Chris Schombs, our Executive Director is busy organizing and planning the upcoming Dr. Martin Luther King Day Health Fair that will take place on January 19th in our parking lot. We are now applying for Patient Assistance for Hepatitis C treatment on 6-8 patients every day. After our successful free viral load testing at Pinellas Hope and Safe Harbor, we are finding ways to get people who have been left homeless, by tragedies, loss of loved ones, and loss of jobs, get the help they need to get free treatment for Hepatitis C. We have already started patients on therapy and have patients calling us every day telling us that they just received their medication from the Biotech Company, Gilead Sciences, by UPS and are ready to start treatment. Our first patient is in his 5th week and we hope to see him cured by week 8. With all of this happening, I have decided to give more time to seeing patients at Love the Golden Rule. I will only work at the Health Department on Wednesdays, and […] readmore

Free Testing

Hello Everyone, We had an amazing week last week for the free testing event we had. We did a total of 92 free viral load tests, over a three day span. Day one was at our clinic, day two was at Pinellas Hope, and finished it up at Safe Harbor. We are considering it a big success. We would like to say Thank You to Bio Collections of Miami for their time, services, and support. If it weren’t for them, we would not have been afforded the opportunity to give these potential clients the ability to get a test done. Stay tuned for the next round of free viral load testing.
